Restoring Original Features

French Vintage

Design Brief:

  • To solve a leaking roof and an serious issue of damp in the bedroom
  • To create a theme of French vintage
  • To incorporate the 19th century furniture into the design
  • Restore the original features of the room

This was a great project to undertake as the brief really allowed us to be really creative with the design. The style we wanted to create was one of lavishness, sumptuousness and luxury. Once we had dealt with the practical issues and the room had been completely re-plastered we had a blank canvas to be as creative as our imaginations would allow.

The room, with only one sash window, was quite dark so we wanted to create as much light as possible without simply using natural colours. We chose an iridescent wall covering for a feature wall opposite the window which ricocheted the natural light around the whole room. The use of silk for the curtains with the pooling effect gave the room a sense of excess and opulence. We restored the picture rail, covings and central ceiling rose to be in keeping with the period of the house. We wanted the carpet to merely act as a backdrop for all of the other features but we did include a handmade silk rug adding to the luxury of the design. The centre piece of the design was a stunning twelve arm crystal chandelier
